Northrop T-38 Talon

The T-38 was the first supersonic a/c designed from scratch as a trainer and enjoyed a successful and long career with the USAF and other nations.  The first contract issued in May of 1956 was for six YT-38 pre-production prototypes with the first production a/c did not fly until May 1960.  A total 1,187 a/c were delivered by the end of production in  January 1972.  With no immediate replacement in sight, this a/c is expected to remain in service with the USAF through 2015.
